A UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) Number is a 10 digit number that HMRC issue to you when you registere for self employment. This reference number is unique to you and means that HMRC can identify you, just like your passport number or national insurance number – for this reason it is really important you hold onto it.
How to Find Your UTR number
Here are a few places you can check to find your UTR number:
- Your HMRC Tax Return;
- Statement of Account from HMRC;
- HMRC Payment Reminders or Late Payment Letters;
- Your SA250 which is a letter issued by HMRC when you first registering for self assessment notifying you of your UTR number.
Your UTR number can be found online in your Government Gateway account. If you registered for self employment online, you will have been required to set up an online account to manage your registration process, personal tax returns, reminder and correspondence with HMRC. You can generally find your UTR number within the self assessment section or the top right hand corner of your account summary.
You can call HMRC on 0300 200 3310, where they will ask you to questions to confirm your identity and then post your UTR number to you (which can take up to 7 days to arrive).
