HMRC VAT Registration Online

In most cases businesses can register for VAT online on the HMRC website.

You either need to create or login to your Government Gateway account.  You may already have a Government Gateway account for your business if you are registered for other taxes, such as PAYE or Corporation Tax.

Completing Your VAT Registration Form Online

As part of the VAT registration process you will be asked to provide information about you and your business:

Section 1: About Your Business

HMRC requires information about your business for example whether it is a limited company, partnership or you are a sole trader as well as contact details like address, phone number and UTR number. To gain more understanding, HMRC also likes to know what your business does as well so you will be asked to complete a brief description of your businesses trade.

Section 2: About the VAT Registration

In this section HMRC is trying to understand why you are applying for VAT.  Are you choosing Voluntary Registration? Are you set to exceed the VAT registration limits so need to make a Compulsory Registration?
